A Psalm for the broken hearted

Psalm 55 was written by David during one of his frequent periods of discouragement and distress. It’s a Psalm for those who have heavy hearts. It’s a Psalm for those who feel the sting of being burdened. There have been numerous times in my life that discouragement seems to be the theme of my week or month.

Charles Haddon Spurgeon wrote, “I bear willing witness that I owe more to the fire, the hammer and the file than to anything else in the Lord's workshop. I sometimes question whether I have ever learned anything except through the rod. When my schoolroom is darkened, I see the most."
Amen! It’s been the tough times in my life I’ve learned the most valuable things. Things of God. Eternal things. More Christ-likeness emerges from my life through storms than through sunshine.
These are select verses from Psalm 55 that show how God navigated David through a stormy time in his life.
Verses 1-2 – Make sure you tell God how you feel.
Give ear to my prayer, O God, do not ignore my plea; hear me and answer me. My thoughts trouble me and I am distraught…
Even though David was troubled he still called on God. Prayer to God makes a huge difference.

Verses 6-8 – We can’t run from difficulty; so we might as well face it!
I said, “Oh, that I had wings of a dove! I would fly away and be at rest – I would flee far away and stay in the desert; I would hurry to my place of shelter, far from the tempest and storm.”
If you think going to another location is going to solve your problems; forget about it. Face your difficulty relying on God’s help.

Verse 22 – Cast your cares on the Lord.
Cast your cares on the Lord and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous fall.
What a promise! God will never let us fall. God will always sustain us. Take all your cares and cast them on the Lord. The word cast means to throw, to remove something from one place to another. Where is your concern right now? Where is your worry? It’s swirling around in your mind, in your heart, in your emotions. When you cast your care on the Lord, you are removing it from your own heart and placing it on His. The New Testament version of Psalm 55:22 is found in 1 Peter 5: 7 – Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you. We cast because God cares for us. Don’t ever doubt this truth – God cares for me.
So how do we remove our anxiety from us and place it on God? Here’s a helpful acronym.

Confess that God will take care of you. God will sustain you. God will never let you fall.

Ask God to take the issue you are facing and attend to it. Just like David did in verse 2.

Surrender your broken heart to God. Give God the right to handle it anyway He sees fit.

Trust God. He cares for you. Trusting God means that I act as though everything is going to be alright because God said it would be. At the end of it all; we win!

Do you have a heavy heart right now? Cast all your care on Him because He cares for you!

Comments:
Thank you for this. I think this is a reminder that we all need every time we are going through something. Another verse I find comfort in is Romans 12:12 (I can't wait tell we get to hear this in your sermon!). Friends and I were continuously praying about certain things in my life. I was feeling a little defeated one day when nothing had happened after praying so much. I happened to be reading a daily devotional and it just so happened that the day I was feeling defeated was when Romans 12:12 was that days devotional.
