Resolution – the
mental state or quality of being determined to do something or to be firm in a
purpose. It sure is easier to define the word resolution than to demonstrate
it. I’m not a big proponent of New Year’s
resolutions. Resolutions tend to go in
one year and out the next. Research has
shown that most Americans give up on their resolutions by Valentine’s Day. If you keep your resolution for six weeks,
you are probably above average.
Being resolved
is something we should practice every day, not just at the beginning of the
year. Every day is a day to be more determined to be like Christ. To let His peace rule our hearts and to let
His word dwell in us richly (Col. 3:15-16). To see others like He sees
them. To love others like He loves them.
To reach out to others like He does. To
be more like Jesus Christ requires dependence on Jesus and a willing heart on our part. It requires prayer and practice. And it requires knowing Him. Like Paul said, “I want to know Christ and
the power of his resurrection and the fellowship of sharing his sufferings,
becoming like him in his death…” (Philippians 3:10).
As I was
contemplating this theme, I became inspired to do a Bible Study. I felt like the Holy Spirit was leading me to
do a “Red Letter” Bible study. A study
of the words of Jesus with the intent of knowing Him better. I want to look at the red letters in the
Bible so I can practice being more like Him.
I fully intended for this to be a personal Bible study but the Lord
prompted me to make it available online.
So… for the next
few weeks I am going to be posting five lessons a week centered on the words of
Jesus. A five to eight minute bible
study designed to help us know Christ better and to be more like Him. Do you
want to join me? I hope so. Keeping a resolution together is better than
trying to keep it alone.
Let’s allow
Jesus prayer to be our resolve. In John 17: 1-5 (Message) Then, raising his eyes in prayer, he said: Father, it's time. Display
the bright splendor of your Son. So the Son in turn may show your bright
splendor. You put him in charge of everything human, so he might give real and
eternal life to all in his charge. And this is the real and eternal life: That they know you, the one and only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you sent. I glorified
you on earth by completing down to the last detail what you assigned me to do.
And now, Father, glorify me with your very own splendor, the very splendor I
had in your presence before there was a world.
To know Christ
better: I think I’m going to have a Happy New Year!
