Do you remember these lyrics from Earth Wind and Fire:
When should I sing? - Psalm 96:2 says, "Sing to the Lord, praise His name; proclaim His salvation day after day." So everyday it is appropriate to sing to the Lord.
When you feel down and out Sing a song, it'll make your day
Here's a time to shout Sing a song, it'll make a way
Sometimes it's hard to care Sing a song, it'll make your day
A smile so hard to bear Sing a song, it'll make a way
Sing a song...
These lyrics are true. Singing has a way of changing our mood, making our day lighter and brighter. When you get the right combination of words, melody, and rhythm, you have a prescription for a better day. But not just any song. I believe songs that point us to our Creator, songs that direct us to His love and care in our life will make our day lighter and brighter.
God created all of us with the capacity to sing praises to Him. You may be thinking, "I can't sing." What you mean to say is, "I can't sing well." Everyone can sing. Not everyone needs a microphone and a stage. If I am singing to God with a heart that is willing to praise Him, to Him it sounds beautiful. And it changes my attitude for the day.
This week, I heard some beautiful singing at Joni and Friends Camp. The singers I heard were physically challenged. Some could not even utter a phrase. But in their hearts there was a symphony of praise to God. In His ears He was being praised and honored and glorified. The Bible says, "Let everything that has breath praise the Lord." If you're breathing you can sing a song to the Lord.
When should I sing? - Psalm 96:2 says, "Sing to the Lord, praise His name; proclaim His salvation day after day." So everyday it is appropriate to sing to the Lord.
Where should I sing? - Psalm 149:1 says, "Praise the Lord. Sing to the Lord a new song, his praise in the assembly of the saints." Obviously, it's good to sing at church. It doesn't matter if you have a good voice, sing anyway! Verse 5 in that same Psalm says, "Let the saints rejoice in this honor and sing for joy on their beds." So we can sing at home as well. Anywhere we are is a good place to sing a song to the Lord.
Why should I sing? Two important reasons: 1) It is good for us. Psalm 92:1, "It is good to praise the Lord and make music to your name, O most High." 2) It's one of the ways God has designed for us to enter into His presence. Psalm 100:2, "Worship the Lord with gladness; come before Him with joyful songs." A song of joy is one way I can experience the presence of God.
I don't know if Earth Wind and Fire were inspired by the Bible to write Sing a Song; but they hit on a spiritual truth. Sing a song (to the Lord) it will make your day!
There's within my heart a melody!
