There are four verses in the NIV Bible that contain the word resolve. If you are looking for some Biblical resolutions to start the New Year, look no farther.
1. 2 Chronicles 20:3- Alarmed Jehoshaphat resolved to inquire of the Lord...
Facing a tough circumstance, the king decided to pray. What a great resolution! Wouldn't it be great if all of us resolved to pray more? The New Year will be much better if we will determine to ask God for His guidance, His wisdom and His will in our lives.
2. Psalm 17:3- Though you probe my heart and examine me at night, though you test me, you will find nothing, I have resolved that my mouth will not sin.
David resolved not to let his mouth sin. Another great resolution, one that requires prayer ( see resolution #1). Lord, help my words be healing, not hurting.
3. Daniel 1:8- But Daniel resolved not to defile himself with the royal food and wine, and he asked the chief official for permission not to defile himself this way.
Daniel resolved to take a stand for God. It seemed logical to not make waves, to not cause a stir. Bit in a foreign culture, Daniel did not want to defile himself. Daniel's relationship with the Lord was more important than anything else. That's why he made a stand. This culture that we live in will always want us to compromise but we can be resolved to let our light shine for Jesus.
4. 1 Corinthians 2:2- For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ and him crucified.
Paul made a conscious effort to let his life be directed by the central truth that Christ had been crucified for his salvation. What a great way to approach to life. Every day we can be resolved in the truth that we are friends of God through Christ our Lord.
Four Biblical resolutions for the New Year - pray, pray that you will watch your words, take a stand for the Lord in this crazy culture and let your life be dominated by the truth that you are forgiven by God.
Happy New Year!
