According
to Wikipedia, the name Black Friday originated in Philadelphia. The name
described the heavy and disruptive pedestrian and vehicle traffic which would
occur on the day after Thanksgiving.
Many years later, an alternative explanation began to be offered: that
Black Friday indicates the point at which retailers begin to turn a profit, or
get “in the black”. Last year, 226 million people took to the stores on the day
after Thanksgiving. They spent an average of $398.62 per shopper. So one can
see why the retailers open so early on Black Friday. A total of $52 billion rolled into the U.S.
economy on this day.
This
is not a rant on people who go out on Friday after Thanksgiving to shop. I
think it’s quite acceptable if one chooses to do that. I would never do it. I really
don’t like to shop anytime or anywhere. I’m more of a get in and get out kind
of shopper. So Black Friday really has
no allure for me. I’m more of a Good Friday guy than a Black Friday guy. Here’s why:
1)
On Black Friday people go shopping. On
Good Friday God came seeking.
2)
On Black Friday stores will open early.
On Good Friday the curtain that separated us from the presence of God
opened permanently.
3)
On Black Friday people will find the best deal possible. On Good Friday God
provided the best deal possible.
4)
On Black Friday people will stand in line for a long time. On Good Friday
people can stand in God’s grace forever and stand in awe of the One who gave
His all for us.
5)
On Black Friday there is a lot of pushing and shoving. On Good Friday there is
a lot of mercy and forgiveness.
6)
On Black Friday someone will save $50 on a $1000 item. On Good Friday Jesus
pays everything to save my soul.
7)
Black Friday will start all over again the next year. Good Friday is once and
for all time.
Give
me Good Friday every day.
We
rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received
reconciliation. Romans 5:11
God made you alive with Christ. He forgave us all our
sins,
having canceled the written code,
with its regulations, that was against us and that stood opposed to us; he took
it away, nailing it to the cross. And having
disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them,
triumphing over them by the cross.
Colossians 2:13-15
Let
us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the
joy set before him endured the cross,
scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Hebrews 12:2
