Our Father In Heaven - Matthew 6:9-13
9 “This, then, is how you should pray: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name,10 your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.11 Give us today our daily bread. 12 Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. 13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.’
We pray to our Father - there is community in prayer. We never pray alone.
We pray to our Father - there is family in prayer. We pray to someone who cares. Abba is a very intimate term for Father.
We pray to our Father in heaven - there is authority in prayer. We pray to someone with power.
Five Realites of the Fatherhood of God from the Old Testament:
1) He is our life giver. - Isaiah 64:8 - Yet, O Lord, you are our Father. We are the clay, you are the potter; we are the work of your hand. Isaiah 64:8
2) He is near to us. - Psalm 68:5-6 - A Father to the fatherless, a defender of widows, is God in his holy dwelling. God sets the lonely in families he leads forth the prisoner with singing; but the rebellious live in a sun-scorched land.
3) He is full of love and grace - Psalm 103:13-14 - As a father has compassion on his children, so the Lord has compassion on those who fear him; for he knows how we are formed, he remembers that we are dust.
4) He is our guide - Jeremiah 31:9 - They will come with weeping; they will pray as I bring them back. I will lead them beside streams of water on a level path where they will not stumble, because I am Israel’s father.
5) He is in charge - Deuteronomy 32:6 - Is this the way you repay the Lord, O foolish and unwise people? Is he not your Father, your Creator, who made you and formed you?
