8 I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go;
I will counsel you and watch over you.
9 Do not be like the horse or the mule,
which have no understanding
but must be controlled by bit and bridle
or they will not come to you.
10 Many are the woes of the wicked,
but the Lord’s unfailing love
surrounds the man who trusts in him.
I hope you read these words from Psalm 32 reflectively. God promises to instruct us, teach us, guide us, counsel us and watch over us. Isn't that amazing? God is willing to give us private lessons, personal counseling and individual direction. God's heart is to shape us and guide us toward fruitfulness and toward His glory.
But He cautions us not to be like a stubborn mule or a horse. These animals require a bit and bridle in order to be controlled. These animals wait until the reins are pulled before they turn. The pain of a bit catches the top of their mouth and forces them to pay attention and move in the desired direction. I dont want to be like that, do you? I don't want to have to hit the wall before I follow God's direction. I don't want to have to face pain before I realize that God is teaching me. I don't want to wait until I'm stuck before I look to God for guidance.
The best way to respond to God's amazing guidance and care in our lives is to trust Him. The Lord's unfailing love surrounds those who trust Him. Are you?

God certainly gives us free "Reign" with our choices in following God's leading in our life's choices...and with that in mind it is still a beautiful thing to watch a professional rider and his horse manuever through a rodeo course in perfect unity. I have watched a few rodeos in my day...the horse never performs on his own...the rider is the pilot in making every move count for the oneness, unity, and pleasure of the horse and the rider and the spectators as they move as one unit through a particular course. No reward, or the prize set before us, comes without dicipline or training. "Train up a child in the way he should go..." There are many days where I covet the bit but never enjoy the pain. There are also days where I require a more aggressive pull on the reigns by my Lord and Master. God's Word is a type of bit if I will heed it before the pain is fully necessary or applied. I have seen a professional rider work a course in the arena who simply applied slight pressure with his boots, and spurs, or the shifting of his weight and a gentle pulling of the reins. The beauty of being trained showed in the discipline in which the horse responded. An unruly horse ends up being the "broncing Bronco" who has been tethered elsewhere to apply the result desired. I don't want to fight God and end up tethered like that.
