Our lives can be summed up by the decisions we make; good or bad. Every person faces a bevy of decisions every day. Our ability to make good decisions is potentially our greatest asset in life. Most likely, every one of us wishes we could turn back the clock and reverse some bad decision that we made.
Proverbs 5:23 warns us, "Death is the reward of an undisciplined life; your foolish decisions trap you in a dead end." (The Message).
How can we make wise decisions so we aren't trapped in a dead end? Let me share with you three biblical ways to make wise decisions.
1. Trust the Lord completely. - Proverbs 3:5-6, "Trust God from the bottom of your heart; don't try to figure out everything on you own. Listen for God's voice in everything you do, everywhere you go; he's the one who will keep you on track." When we trust the Lord completely we are not walking in our wisdom but in His wisdom!
2. Seek out godly counselors. Look for godly people who you can talk to, who you can listen to. Proverbs provides us a lot of counsel in this area:
11:14 – For lack of guidance a nation falls but many advisers make victory sure.
12:15 – The way of a fool seems right to him but a wise man listens to advice.
13:10 – Pride only breeds quarrels, but wisdom is found in those who take advice.
15:22 – Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed.
19:20 – Listen to advice and accept instruction, and in the end you will be wise.
24:5-6 – A wise man has great power, and a man of knowledge increases strength; for waging war you need guidance, and for victory many advisers.
3. Pray it through and think it over. A wise man prays when faced with a decision. The Lord’s purpose prevails and our steps are directed by the Lord when we ask Him to guide us, lead us to show us the way.
The Lord guides us, not normally by bolts of lightning or messages in the sky, but by giving us brains to think through our options and determine His will in any given matter.
John Wesley said: “God generally guides me by presenting reasons to my mind for acting in a certain way.”
Dr. J. Oswald Sanders said: “God generally guides (us) by the exercise of (our) sanctified judgment.”
So humble your heart before God, seek out people who are godly, pray and think a lot and God will direct us (he will keep us on track).
He who trusts in himself is a fool, but he who walks in wisdom is kept safe - Proverbs 28:26.
