I heard God’s voice today as I was reading Psalm 81. It’s one of those Psalms where God speaks in the
first person. It’s very clear from reading this Psalm that God wants us to completely
trust Him; to completely obey Him.
In verse 8 God says, “Hear, O my people and I will warn you,
if you would but listen to me.” God
speaking to us is not the problem. The problem is us listening to God.
He says it again in
verse 11, “But my people would not listen to me; Israel would not submit to me.”
Again in verse 13 God says, “If my people would listen to
me, if Israel would follow my ways, how quickly would I subdue their enemies
and turn my hand against their foes.”
Hearing from God means I put myself in a posture to listen to God. I must submit to God. I must follow God’s ways. I have to want to hear from God.
He gives us a graphic picture of this obedient submission in verse 10. “Open wide your mouth and I will fill it”. It‘s a picture of a mother bird filling the mouths of her chicks. Two questions arise from this picture in verse 10. Is my mind completely open to God filling it? Is my life completely open to God filling it? We must put ourselves in a position to hear from God. Hearing from God means my heart and mind are in a position of full submission to him. How hungry am I for God to fill me with His Word?
As I was finishing my devotional time in Psalm 81 today, I believe the Holy Spirit laid these words on my heart: Do you want to feel better or hear from God?
What is more important to you? I want to hear from God.
