Day One: Words of Jesus Bible Study

I Must Be About My Father’s Business

Luke 2:48-50

So when they saw Him, they were amazed; and His mother said to Him, “Son, why have You done this to us? Look, Your father and I have sought You anxiously.”
49 And He said to them, “Why did you seek Me? Did you not know that I must be about My Father’s business?” 50 But they did not understand the statement which He spoke to them.

These are the first recorded words of Jesus (Red Letters) and they are very revealing.  Jesus’ earthly parents are frantically looking for him and find him in the Temple.  At first glance Jesus’ response to Mary’s question seems sassy – “Why did you seek Me?” Or in the NIV, “Why were you searching for me?  This was a statement spoken with great respect yet it was insightful.  John Piper writes, “The last statement—that they did not understand Jesus—is Luke's way of saying to us the reader: "There's more here than meets the eye. This is the point, don't miss it" (cf. Luke 18:34). They were searching and searching and finally they turn him up at the temple. Where did they search? In the playground, the local swimming hole, in the shops, at the bakery? Jesus answers: You shouldn't have had to seek at all. For you know, don't you, that there is laid on me an inner necessity to be in my Father's house (or about his business—either translation is possible)?”
Jesus is letting his parents and us know that He is the One and Only Son of God.  God is His Father.  And as a result of that relationship He must be doing the Father’s business. Jesus, at the age of twelve, was driven by a passion for His Father’s will, His Father’s heart and His Father’s way.  What a statement: I must be about my Father’s Business.
Consider some of the other “must” statements Jesus made and we get an idea of the Father’s business.
·         Luke 4: 43 – I must preach the Good News of the Kingdom of God…
·         Luke 9:22 – The Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and the chief priests and teachers of the law and he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life.
·         Luke 19: 5 – Zacchaeus, come down immediately. I must stay at your house today.
·         John 9:4 – As long as it is day, I must do the work of Him who sent me.
The Father’s business was seeking and saving the lost.  The Father’s business was extending and expanding His kingdom.  The Father’s business was doing the eternal.
The words of Jesus at twelve years old reveal that He is the Son of God and His mission is to do the Father’s will.
May Jesus’ passion and priority be ours.  Are we about the Father’s business?

Comments:
Good word..........reminds me to be of my Father's business everyday in everything.
I think it must of been extremely difficult for Mary and Joseph to be Jesus's parents.
They weren't normal parents. He was there earthly son yet he was the son of God.
