Seeking the Lost

Do you remember playing hide and seek? The seeker was not the person that anybody wanted to be. As a matter of fact, the seeker had a special title: "it".  You're it.
There are always more hiders than there are seekers.
One day Jesus entered Jericho and found a wee little man who had climbed up a fig tree to see Jesus. His name was Zacchaeus. Normally, people who are "out on a limb" need help. Jesus, being the Master Seeker took notice of this man. He was a tax collector and had cheated people out of money. He wasn't a popular figure in Jesus day. But Jesus took notice.  Jesus seemed to always notice those who would otherwise go unnoticed. Jesus brought salvation to Zacchaeus that day and then made a tremendous mission statement; a statement that defined the reason Jesus came to earth.  He said, "For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost" (Luke 19:10).  Since this is Jesus' mission then it should be ours as well.  In other words, we're "it".  We are the seekers.  The world is full of hiders and is in desperate need of seekers.  So how can we be better seekers?
1) Always be aware how valuable people are to God.  Everyone is a ten to God.  Bill Hybels said, "You will never lock eyes with anyone that does not matter to God."  What a true and powerful statement.
2) Be sensitive to the spiritual needs of people.  The "hiders" really want to be found. They are really spiritually hungry. How many people do we pass everyday who have spiritual needs but we're in too big of a hurry to notice?  Jesus left us a legacy of seeking people in this way.  A woman at a well with 5 failed marriages and a live-in lover. Levi who was collecting taxes and cheating people, like Zacchaeus. A prostitute who followed Jesus so closely she poured all her perfume on his feet. All of these people were spiritually hungry and Jesus took notice.  Will we?
3) Be praying for better vision and for clear opportunities. Ask God to open your eyes to the hungry. Ask God to give you opportunities to find those who are lost.  Ask God to give you the courage to share Christ with them.  These are prayers that God loves to answer.
4) Remember to let people know they can come home. Staying with the "hide and seek" analogy, do your remember this part of the game?  "Ollie, Ollie, Oxen Free".  That phrase meant that everyone can come home, without penalty!  That phrase is interesting. It's Latin for "Liberate the Oxen." Not really. I don't know what that phrase means. I know that in hide and seek when that phrase is heard, everyone gets to come home.
Jesus came so everyone can be at home with God.  We can't save anyone but we can seek everyone, like Jesus.
You're it!
