I read the following statement in an article and totally agree, "The irony of social networks is that they can actually damage relationships." People believe they are connecting but are they really connecting? Social skills are changing these days, if we have any. A recent survey by Intel noted that mobile manners are growing worse every day. The article pointed out that mobile technology is having a huge impact on societal norms. Read the Intel survey
I recently walked into a restaurant and noticed 4 adults sitting at table with their eyes glued to their smart phones. They weren't talking to each other just texting. I suppose they were facebook friends. Wouldn't it be better to be friendly with the friends in front of you rather than the friends on your smart phone?
I believe the wisdom of Proverbs can help our culture that believes it's making connections but really isn't connecting at all. Proverbs says alot about having friends and being a friend. Here are 4 ways we can really make connections with people.
1. Project an attitude of friendliness. In Proverbs 18:24 (NKJV) "A man who has friends must himself be friendly". What a great proverb. Oscar Wilde said, "Some cause happiness wherever they go; others whenever they go." To be in the first category, have an attitude of friendliness.
2. Practice kindness. Proverbs 11:16-17, "A kindhearted woman gains respect...A kind man benefits himself."
3. Display cheerfulness. Proverbs 15:13 "A happy heart makes the face cheerful." V. 15 - "The cheerful heart has a continual feast." V. 30 - "A cheerful look brings joy to the heart."
4. Cultivate patience. Proverbs 14:29 - "A patient man has great understanding." Proverbs 16:32, "Better a patient man than a warrior." Proverbs 19:11, "A man's wisdom gives him patience."
What timely counsel. Practice friendliness, kindness, cheerfulness, patience and watch how connected you become!
