One Book gets us home

If you were marooned on a desert island and could only have one book with you, what book would you choose?
I read where someone asked G.K. Chesterton this question. Given his reputation as one of the most erudite and creative Christian writers in the first half of the 20th century, one would naturally assume his answer would be the Bible. It was not. Chesterton chose, "Thomas' Guide to Practical Ship-building."
This makes sense, right? If we're trapped on an island we want a book that will get us home. We don't want to be entertained or even informed, we want a book that will save us!
The truth is that we are trapped. We're trapped in wrong patterns of behavior and thought that lead to death. We need a guide that will free us. We need words of truth that will get us home safe. And those truthful, guiding words are found in the Bible. The word of God is able to renew our minds and set us free.
Take it and read it. Meditate on it and memorize it. It's God's word to get us home safe.
David wrote these beautiful words:
The Law of the Lord is perfect; reviving the soul. The statutes of the Lord are trustworthy; making wise the simple. The precepts of the Lord are right, giving joy to the heart. The commands of the Lord are radiant, giving light to the eyes. The ordinances of the Lord are sure and altogether righteous. They are more precious than gold, than much pure gold; they are sweeter than honey, than honey from the comb. By them your servant is warned; in keeping them is great reward. (Psalm 19:7-11).

I think the reward is we get off the island and get to go home! So, read your Bible. Study it. Practice it. And get in a small group and talk about it. It will revive your soul. It will bring joy to your heart. It will give light to your eyes. It will get you home!
