I can't believe football season is almost here. It seems like we were just watching the Super Bowl, doesn't it? Time flies.
One of the reasons I like American football so much is the absence of vuvuzelas. Thank God! A vuvuzela is that annoying horn that everyone in the stands blew during the World Cup in South Africa. That constant B flat tone, that was a little sharp, for a solid 90 minutes is enough to drive anyone insane. There are no horn blowers in American football. There are only people who paint their faces, take off their shirts in freezing temperatures and yell and scream for 60 minutes. That's not crazy, right?
I read a touching article this week about a football player whose name is Tyson Alualu. Tyson played college football for the Cal Bears. He was drafted by the Jacksonville Jaguars in the first round. Tyson grew up in Hawaii. He's 6' 3 and weighs 305 pounds. His signing bonus was 17.5 million dollars. Someone asked Alualu what he wants to do with his money. He said he wants to use it to make a better life for his parents and his 8 siblings in Hawaii. He also intends to build a new church for his father's congregation in Kalihi, an underprivileged neighborhood in Honolulu. He already has a piece of land picked out for it.
"I'm going to use it to help my family, my parents and also the community," Alualu said Tuesday. "Building a church is important for me so that others can have the opportunity to worship God. We'll see how it works out."
Much more than loving the game of football, I love athletes that use their God given gifts to build God's kingdom. I just became a fan of Tyson Alualu.
