Beth Shean is one of the Decapolis (deca=ten polis = cities). I always thought that these cities were located around the Sea of Galilee, but I was wrong. These cities are known for their strong Roman influence and you will be able to see (from the video) ruins that will remind you of Rome. Beth Shean is an ancient city rich in history. King Saul and his sons, who lost the battle against the Philistines at nearby Mount Gilboa, were hung from Beth Shean's city walls (1 Samuel 31). During the Byzantine period, Beth Shean served as the capital of Palestina Secunda. During the 8th century AD, the city was destroyed by a powerful earthquake. Beth Shean is one of Israel's most prominent archeological sites, with a Roman theater, the Roman Cardo (main street), giant columns, mosaics and many other impressive ruins. Parts of the movie, "Jesus Christ Superstar" were shot at this location.
One of the practical, spiritual applications for me, from this place, was how the mighty can fall. When people attempt to mix the living God and all kinds of other gods into their lives, it proves to be toxic. Beth Shean (House of Commotion) is a graphic reminder of that truth.
