A Thanksgiving Psalm - 145

I think Psalm 145 is a great Thanksgiving Psalm. This is a psalm of David. It’s an alphabetic acrostic. Each verse begins with a letter from the Hebrew alphabet. It was a way for people to remember the Psalm. In this Psalm it is God who is brought to memory in thanksgiving praise. There are no requests in this psalm. There are no confessions. This psalm is full of praise for God and to God. David writes in verses 1 and 2:

I will exalt you, my God the King; I will praise your name forever and ever. Every day I will praise you and extol your name for ever and ever.
Notice the intention of David to gratefully praise God - "I Will". It is up to us to make a choice to praise God for His blessings. We should make this choice everyday. God is worthy of my praise to Him everyday; not just at Thanksgiving, or on Sunday. Not only is God worthy, but I need to praise God every day. It refocuses my attention. It sharpens my spiritual edge. C.S. Lewis wrote, “We praise what we enjoy because the praise not merely expresses but completes our enjoyment.” Thanking God completes my enjoyment in God.
I noticed 4 areas in Psalm 145 for which I can be grateful to God:
1. God is great! - verses 3-6
2. God is good! - verses 7 - 9
3. God's kingdom is glorious! - verses 11-13
4. God is gracious! - verses 14 - 16

I hope you will reflect on Psalm 145 this Thanksgiving. It's good to give thanks to the Lord.
My mouth will speak in praise of the Lord. Let every creature praise His holy name for ever and ever.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Pastor Tim
