Learning in the dark

Darkness. Half of every day is dominated by it. Sometimes it seems like half of our week, or month, or year, or life is dominated by it as well. Not physical darkness, but emotional and spiritual darkness. In these dark periods everything seems to be unclear or confusing. People seem to be unreasonable and friends seem to be distant. It seems like no one understands during a dark time and we feel isolated. In the hymn, The Solid Rock, the hymn writer pens these words, "When darkness veils His lovely face, I rest on His unchanging grace". Sometimes darkness will even seem to hide the lovely face of God from us.
Jesus spoke about darkness one day. In Matthew 10:27 Jesus said, "What I tell you in the dark, speak in the daylight."
Eleven powerful words from Christ that teach us some eternal truths. First, I think it's clear that all of us go through dark times. Jesus not only spoke about it, he experienced it. It may seem like you're the only one going through a dark time but you're not. We all experience them. Secondly, Jesus explains how we should posture our self during these dark times. He promises to speak to us so we should posture our self to listen to Him. He's telling us things so we should learn from Him. It's in the dark times that we should trust Him more, depend on Him more. The Lord is able to conform us more to His character if we're willing to learn and listen. Lastly, I think Christ makes it clear that the darkness won't last forever. He says He will tell us things in the dark so we can speak about them in the daylight. It may be dark now but daylight is coming! God will never waste any dark periods in our lives. He will use them, and us, to help others. Don't miss this truth from the Jesus: We speak in the light what we learn in the dark.
Like David said, "Weeping may remain for a night, but rejoicing comes in the morning (Psalm 30:5).
We appreciate the daylight more when we've been through the darkness. Christ will not only take us through the dark, He'll teach us in it.

Listening to Him and leaning on Him,
Pastor Tim
